{WIAW} What I Ate Wednesday – March 2016

Hello! We made it to Wednesday already! This week is flyyyyying by for me.

My friend, Meredith, was here visiting us all weekend and she just left yesterday morning. So since I last checked in with you guys, my days have been jam-packed with Los Angeles sightseeing and lots of eating!

I haven’t done a What I Ate Wednesday post in a long time, so I thought I’d bring it back today.

Now without further ado, here’s everything I ate yesterday:

My morning started off bright and early with breakfast and coffee at 7AM. I had my favorite protein pancakes (I know, you guys are SHOCKED!!).

To be perfectly honest, I hadn’t had these babies all week. I’ve been on an egg and avocado toast kick recently, but this morning I was craving something sweeter and these pancakes hit the spot like always.

{WIAW} What I Ate Wednesday - March 2016 l

I usually have a mid-morning snack, but I didn’t have time for the gym this morning, so I guess my body wasn’t craving as much fuel as usual.

I worked like crazy throughout the morning and broke for lunch around noon. Luckily, I was at M Cafe (one of the restaurants I work for), so I got to dive into this bowl of DELICIOUSNESS.

This Thai Coconut Curry Bowl is one of my favorite items on the M Cafe menu and my belly is always so, so happy after I eat it. The bowl is packed with heirloom brown rice, seasonal vegetables, king salmon, cashews, and an insanely delicious coconut curry broth. #YUM!

Afternoon Snack

My stomach starting growling around 4PM, so I grabbed a smoothie with SunWarrior protein powder from the restaurant. It was the perfect protein-packed snack to hold me over until dinner.

Dinner last night was one of the best meals Trav and I have cooked at home in a long time. Two of the recipes we’d made before, but for some reason we both agreed that everything tasted EXTRA good last night.

Travis grilled my Cilantro and Garam Masala Chicken Kebabs, while I worked on the spiced roasted carrots and roasted fingerling potatoes. We picked up both the purple carrots and fingerling potatoes from the Santa Monica farmer’s market this past Saturday, so perhaps that’s why everything tasted so fresh and delicious.

{WIAW} What I Ate Wednesday - March 2016 l

This picture definitely doesn’t do our meal justice (I know those purple carrots look less than appetizing), but just trust me that it was great.

Damn you terrible dinner lighting!

I may have also split a cookie with Travis after dinner, but I inhaled it so fast that I forgot to snap a photo 😉

What was one thing you ate yesterday? Do you typically have 3 meals or multiple small meal throughout the day?

Eats Lately Fitness Tips and Tricks

New Week, New Month, New Goals

Hi everyone! Happy Monday AND happy November!

Let’s cut right to it. I am going to get completely real with you this morning.

I feel like in every blog post recently, I’ve talked about how busy I’ve been. Ever since we got back from England at the end of August I haven’t felt like my healthy self. It’s almost as if I never got back on track after vacation…even though it’s over two months later. That is SO unlike me.

Don’t get me wrong, I still go to the gym regularly, but my workouts have been complete blah and I honestly attribute that to my not-so-great diet recently. The past two months have been filled with many work events, lots of visitors, celebrations, holidays, and more. In almost all of these situations I’ve let my diet slip (think: carbs on carbs and lots of wine). Even though I still manage to drag myself to the gym the morning after an indulgent night, my workouts are sluggish and they feel ineffective.

So that’s what led me to this blog post. I realized that I have to change a few things in order to start feeling like “myself” again. I told myself that in order to hold myself accountable, I should write down specific goals that I can look back on throughout the month. And what better way to hold myself accountable then to share these goals with you guys and the rest of the blogosphere!?

While I don’t see my crazy work schedule easing up any time soon, I know I need to make more time for myself in order to start feeling healthier and more energized.

Today I am sharing my five goals that will (ideally!) help me get back on a healthy track this November. Let’s do this!

1. No meals / snacks / anything (besides water!) after 8:00PM.

No late night snacking

There have been way too many nights where I’ve given into late night snacking desires. I know this is not good to do right before bed and it’s flat out gotta stop. I often see Travis having a bowl of cereal after dinner, so I’ll do the same (even if I’m not hungry!). He has the metabolism of a race car, so I really shouldn’t be emulating his eating behaviors.

Of course, there will be nights where we’ll have dinner plans with friends or other “life” things after 8PM, but my goal is to stick to this rule whenever I can.

2. Get back on the early morning gym routine.

With my previous job, the only time I had to go to the gym was at 5AM before work, and I was seriously committed to that routine. I talk about my old morning routine and tips to help you work out in the morning in this blog post.

My current job allows me to begin my day a little later, but instead of using that extra time in the morning, I’ve been starting to just sleep in. My goal is to force myself out of bed by 6AM every morning and get my tushie right to the gym. That way I will still have time to do other things (blog, meal prep, etc.) before I leave for work. There have been far too many mornings when I pull myself out of bed around 7AM, have my coffee and breakfast, play around on my computer, and then before I know it, BAM, no time for the gym. Not good.

3. Be smarter about what I eat at work.

Pumpkin Souffle CHAYA Downtown

I work for a restaurant group and part of my job is taste-testing new menu items. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an awesome perk and I love it. But, do I really need to lick a dessert plate clean at 2PM on a Tuesday afternoon? (Guilty as charged!)

What I should be doing is just trying one small bite of a dish (just like the judges on Chopped and MasterChef, you know?). I really have to stick to that.

4. Meal plan every weekend.

Meal Plan - Little Chef Big Appetite

I used to be SO good about this, but have completely fallen off the bandwagon. I’ve mentioned that with the serious heat wave we’ve had, the last thing I wanted to do was turn on the oven or stove, so we resorted to a lot of take out.

No can do anymore! More meal planning –> healthier eating.

5. Two drink maximum when I am out to dinner, at social events, etc.

Enough said. Alcohol leads to low energy and crappier/missed workouts.

Okay, now who is with me!? I need all the support I can get in order to stick to these new goals.

What I Ate Wednesday 4/15/15

Hi Friends!

Yay for Friday! Is it me or did this week draaaaaaag on!? I have a lot of fun plans in store this weekend, so I was just anxiously awaiting the weekend since Monday. Travis’ birthday was yesterday and his sister, Justine, flew in from NYC to surprise him. I am so happy she is here with us this weekend. Justine has the ability to make everything way more fun so I know this weekend is going to be a blast!

Now without further ado, here’s a quick little What I Ate Wednesday post! I always love seeing these posts on other blogs so hopefully you guys are into it, too.

7:30AM: Breakfast

Protein Pancakes

My Wednesday morning started off with my favorite protein pancakes. I think I’ve had these every morning since Passover ended. I seriously missed my oat-filled pancakes.

11:30AM: (Early) Lunch

I workout in the morning, so by the time lunch rolls around I am usually famished. I packed a salad for lunch at work, but I was so hungry that I forgot to snap a pic! So I am sharing another salad picture with you guys, which is honestly way more appetizing than my tupperware lunch.

3:30PM: Snack Time!

I keep lots of snacks in my desk drawer at work because as you guys know, I need to eat every 3-4 hours. No one wants to see my HANGRY side. This Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Zing Bar in my drawer definitely hit the spot that afternoon. I love that these bars are packed with protein and fiber. They always hold me over until dinner.

Zing Bar

7:00PM: Dinner

I tried a new Hoisin Salmon recipe for dinner, but both Travis and I agreed it was just…BLAH. For some reason you couldn’t even taste the hoisin or other flavors in the marinade, so we were both left feeling pretty disappointed. I HATE wasting food, so I still managed to eat it anyway.

I made the salmon with a side of roasted vegetables, and at least those were delicious! There is something about roasting vegetables that makes me want to eat ALL OF THEM. Travis and I polished off the baking sheet of roasted sweet potatoes, zucchini, bell pepper, and onions in no time.

Salmon Dinner

8:30PM: Nighttime snack

I never used to eat snacks after dinner but Travis has been on an after-dinner cereal kick recently, so he got me hooked. It is probably not the best habit to get into, but after a less than satisfying dinner, cereal was in the cards.

I poured myself a bowl of Cheerios with fresh sliced organic strawberries and Blue Diamond Vanilla Unsweetened Almond Milk. It was exactly what I needed.

That’s it from me! Hope you all have a great weekend and I’ll be back early next week to say hi to you guys!

Five Foods from Last Week

Last week was a pretty delicious week in the food department. Here are five foods that fancied my taste buds:

1. Bourbon Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies from the Los Angeles Planned Parenthood Food Fare.

I had the pleasure of attending this amazing event at the Barker Hanger in the Santa Monica Airport last Thursday evening. The restaurant group for which I work was serving food at the event, so I was able to attend and check out DELICIOUS small bites and drinks from the top restaurants, wineries, and breweries in Los Angeles. These Bourbon Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies were stationed near the entrance of the event, STARING ME DOWN and begging me to eat one three.

Gah, cookies! They were so darn good. I declare that all cookies must be made with bourbon milk from now on.

P.S. You’re not alone, I didn’t know what bourbon milk was either. Turns out it’s a mixture of bourbon (duh), milk (duh), sugar and vanilla.

2. Orca Beans!

What is orca, you ask? They are black and white heirloom beans that are super high in iron and fiber. I sampled these special beans at the Natural Products Food Expo in Anaheim, CA last Friday afternoon (more details to come on this event later this week!). In an effort to highlight this “new ingredient,” Bob’s Red Mill served a delicious salad with orca beans, mango, lime, and chiles. It was delicious and oh, so healthy! I am definitely going to buy a bag and start experimenting with orca beans ASAP. I’ll bet they are going to be one of the next trendy healthy food ingredients.

3. Happy Hour at the Misfit: The Basil Gimlet

Travis and I LOVE The Misfit in Santa Monica. You know the name because I’ve talked about it 5,473 times on the blog. We had zero plans this past Saturday (just the way I like it sometimes!), so we decided to head over to The Misfit for Happy Hour in the late afternoon.

Basil Gimlet

I tried a new-to-me cocktail, The Basil Gimlet, and this basil-fanatic right here LOVED it. It was so refreshing, not too sweet, and just what I was craving. After one sip of mine, Travis decided to order one for himself. Considering most (good) cocktails in LA start around $14, we really couldn’t miss out on these $6 Happy Hour cocktails. WINNING!

4. BBQ Salmon

While at The Misfit, we also split this amazing BBQ Salmon. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the BBQ glaze was the ideal amounts of tangy and sweet. I could have easily devoured this on my own.

Salmon The Misfit

5. A Purim Surprise from Mom: Hamentashen!

Happy Purim!

My mom sent us a surprise package for the Jewish holiday of Purim! On Purim, we traditionally eat triangle-shaped cookies, called Hamentashen, and the cookies are filled with sweet spreads such as apple, apricot, chocolate, and poppy seed (like shown below).

Words can’t even express how much I love surprise packages, especially from my mom. She always decorates presents and packages with adorable stickers, like above, and no matter how old I get, I will always love this special touch. I love you, Mom!

So tell me, have you ever tried Orca beans? What about Hamentashen?

What I Ate Wednesday

Well, I took a two week hiatus from blogging and social media, but I am back! The past two weeks have been filled with travel for work and the holiday, so I wanted to fully immerse myself and block out the internet for awhile.  Thanksgiving is my all-time favorite holiday, so I was beyond excited to go home. Spending time with my family is even more special now that I live 2,000 miles away, so I loved soaking up every second with them.

I am finally back at, though! Today I am doing a What I Ate Wednesday post. I always love reading these on other food and lifestyle blogs, so I hope you guys enjoy my food diary from yesterday.

Yesterday morning was a lazy one. I caught a bit of a cold towards the end of my trip home, so I’ve been sleeping as much as possible in order to kick it. I woke up later than usual and I was craving something warm. My favorite steelcut oatmeal with peanut butter and jelly really hit the spot.

Oatmeal with PB&J

I devoured my oatmeal alongside a much-needed cup of coffee.

Even though I had a later breakfast, I was definitely ready to eat again by the time lunch rolled around. I ate my lunch at my desk (I hate doing that, but since I just got back from vacation I have a lot to catch up on). I packed and photographed the salad the night before. It consisted of balsamic grilled chicken, fuji apples, strawberries, gouda cheese, and mixed greens. You’ve definitely seen this combo on the blog before – it is one of my favorites!

Salad for Lunch

Without fail, my body was craving a snack around 4PM, but I realized that I didn’t pack any snacks for the week like I usually do. Luckily, I found one lonely Kind Bar hanging out in the very back of my desk drawer. CHA-CHING!

Kind Bar

Exactly what I needed to hold me over.

For dinner, I whipped up a mahi mahi recipe that my aunt, Miriam, sent me. She made this dish for us when Travis and I were visiting with her and my uncle in Arizona. At the time neither Travis or I were big fish eaters, but this meal definitely changed our opinions!

We marinated the fish in a rice vinegar, honey, garlic mixture and used the remaining marinade to dress stir-fried red pepper, zucchini, and bok choy. We ate black rice alongside the fish and veggies! Travis has been reading a lot about traces of arsenic in brown rice, so we decided to switch to whole-grain black rice for the foreseeable future. Besides the fact that our rice cooker omitted a lot of black steam, black rice is just as easy to cook as white and brown rice.

We loved this meal and it was super easy to whip up on a weeknight. I will try to share the recipe (and a non-iphone picture) with you guys soon!

What was the best thing you ate on Wednesday?

Have you ever tried black rice?

Photo Dump

Sharing a big ol’ photo dump from my iphone! I haven’t done this in awhile, so I am ready to catch you up on what I’ve been up to.

Dinner Party

Travis and I have talked about doing monthly dinner parties at our apartment forever now, but we finally got around to it. We hosted a Mediterranean-themed dinner party and invited over four of our friends. We cooked the main meal and our guests brought the appetizers and desserts. All of the food was AMAZING and we all had a blast. Travis and I promised to commit to doing this once a month from now on, but I know with the holidays right around the corner it is going to be tough.

Bessie Suitcase

Travis was unpacking from a brief work trip and Bessie decided that his suitcase was her new bed. She does a lot of things that don’t exactly make much sense, but we love her for it. She either reaaaaaaally missed her Dad or she genuinely thought his suitcase was a new bed for her…Really wish I could read her mind sometimes.

Little Door

I met my old coworker for dinner at The Little Door in Santa Monica last week. The Little Door in West Hollywood was one of the first restaurants I ever went to LA and it quickly became my favorite. It is always my go-to restaurant for special occasions. I was thrilled when I heard they were opening a location on the west side of LA because it meant a much shorter trek to my favorite food. The new location did not disappoint, but catching up with my old coworker was even better.

Girls Night

My friend Kelly put together a girl’s night out on Saturday and I was so excited! None of us girls new each other (Kelly was the link), but we hit it off right away! We first went over to Kelly’s for drinks and appetizers (she put together an amazing spread of food) and then we headed out to the Church Key for dinner together.

Girls Night Girls Night

Unfortunately, the photos from the night are very blurry, but I am glad I at least snagged a few. I loved meeting these girls so much, and we all knew right away that we are going to be great friends!

A HUGE highlight of the night was when I spotted the entire cast of How to Get Away With Murder at the table next to us. Do you watch that show? If not, you MUST start – it is so addicting. I watch it religiously every Thursday, so I had a minor freak out when I saw them so close to us. I went over and told them how much I loved the show and they were so cool about it.

How to Get Away with Murder

I don’t even care that it’s blurry because it is the BEST.PHOTO.EVER. Even if you don’t watch HTGAWM, you may recognize a few of them from Harry Potter, Gilmore Girls, and Orange is the New Black.

Protein Pancakes

I got home reaaaaaally late on Saturday night Sunday morning, so I was thrilled to open my eyes in the morning to Travis bringing in breakfast in bed. He brought me my favorite protein pancakes and coffee and I was the happiest girl on the planet. I ended up bringing the food back to our dining room to eat with him because I didn’t want to eat alone, hah.

The rest of Sunday I basically just lounged around all day. And now we are all caught up!

Weekend Photos

I’m stopping in this morning to share a few pictures I snapped on my phone this weekend. Travis was away on business, so it was just Bessie and me holding down the fort.

Since you all know how much Bessie likes sending text messages, she insisted on taking a few selfies to send to her daddy. Of course, I obliged.

What a little camera hog she is!

I had a work event on Saturday night at a club in West Hollywood. We were catering food for a magazine cover launch party. Below are two of the delicious items we brought: rice-free sushi rolls made with almond “rice” and wagyu beef carpaccio crostini. YUM.

Off the side of the kitchen there was a closet filled with the CREEPIEST ventriloquist dummies I have ever seen. Of course, I had to take a photo with them, but I couldn’t even keep a straight face knowing that I am now officially cursed because I mocked them. CREEEEP-Y.

Bootsy Bellows

I was exhausted by the time I got home on Saturday night, so I couldn’t even say no to Bessie when she BEGGED me to sleep in the bed.

She curled up next to me and slept like an angel until about 3AM, when she woke me up by licking my face. This dog has no concept of time, so she probably thought it was a perfectly reasonable time for some good ol’ face licking. Unfortunately, I had a lot of trouble getting back to bed after that so Bessie and I got up around 6AM to start our Sunday.

Protein Pancakes

I tried to make the best of it by making my favorite breakfast, protein pancakes, while digging into a new cookbook.

I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning the apartment and doing 837,934,201 loads of laundry. (Yes, that many). While the clothes were in the dryer, I decided to throw together a delicious batch of my cardamom granola to bring to work this week. If you haven’t tried this granola yet, YOU MUST. It’s the perfect combination of sweet, salty, and spicy.

Cardamom Granola

I ended my Sunday night by finishing Big Love (yeah, I know I am years behind on that one, but MAN was that show good!) and digging into this homemade Greek salad with grilled chicken, roasted red peppers, sundried tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, diced cucumber, and feta.

I hope your week is off to a great start!

Life Recently

Thank you all for the sweetest comments, texts, and thoughts on my last blog post. For those of you who’ve met Bessie, it is clear how much she’s touched your lives as well. She is a really special pup and we feel so lucky 🙂

Besides adopting Bessie, this past month has actually been a fairly eventful one for me! I am leaving my position as a consultant and transitioning into a very different role (but one that I think suits me very well). I am going to be doing marketing for a restaurant group in LA! While it was a difficult decision to leave my current job, I am very excited for this new journey in the food industry. I know I will learn so much and I will be working in and industry that I am so passionate about.

To celebrate this new phase in my career, Travis took me out to dinner to Fig and Olive in West Hollywood. Neither of us had been before, but it’s been on my list of restaurants to try after numerous friends raved about it.

Dinner Fig and Olive

Our meal was incredible. Unfortunately, the restaurant was very dark, so the pictures I snapped did the meal no justice, therefore I decided not to share them with you guys. At the beginning of the meal they brought over three different types of olive oil for us to sample with warm doughy bread. This was easily my favorite part! I was tempted to tell them to cancel the rest of the orders because I just wanted bread and olive oil for dinner, but I didn’t think they would necessarily approve of that…

On Thursday, Travis and I went to the Eminem and Rihanna Monster Tour at the Rose Bowl Stadium. We bought the tickets the day they went on sale many months ago. I always find it so difficult purchasing tickets so far in advance because I think to myself, “well how do I know where I am going to be six months from now?” In the end, I am so happy Travis persuaded me to go through with it because the concert was a blast!

Since the Rose Bowl is pretty far from where we live and since the stadium sent us numerous emails in advance warning everyone of how crowded it was going to be, we decided to beat the traffic and get there early. We packed dinner and some snacks in a cooler so we could tailgate. We were planning on just eating in the car once we parked, but we lucked out and ended up parking right next to some picnic tables, so we were able to sit down and spread out for a few hours before the show. I packed us salads with pink lady apples, golden raisins, celery, toasted pecans, chicken and a balsamic vinaigrette. I know what you’re thinking… not your typical tailgate food, but we figured we would end up eating some sort of unhealthy snacks once we were in the stadium, so we decided to keep it pretty light for dinner.

Rose Bowl

The concert was an absolute blast! The music and the entire atmosphere was amazing. It was such a fun thing to do in the middle of the week to break out of our usual routine. I do love Rihanna’s music, but I personally think Eminem stole the show. I’d never seen him live before, but he KILLS IT on stage. (Oh yeah, and we did enjoy our fair share of stadium food and drinks throughout the show).

This past weekend was pretty low key. It included lots of walks with our favorite pup:

Bessie Walk

Some food blogging:

Food Photography

…which turned out to be a disaster. This weekend was an utter failure in my kitchen. I set out to test and photograph four different recipes for you guys this weekend and ALL of them turned out terribly. Even my trusty taste-tester, Travis, told me that none of them were blog-worthy (don’t worry, he let me down nicely). By Sunday afternoon I was feeling pretty frustrated because I’d thrown three recipes into the trash can and I hate wasting food! The final recipe was a cookie recipe that Travis and I agreed was edible but tasted “too healthy,” which is never a goal of mine when I am baking dessert. Oh well! I guess they can’t all be winners.

Bessie Food

Bessie on the other hand, has been having a BLAST trying new food recently. Travis has been doing lots of research on all-natural and grain-free dog foods for her. I know that some people think grain-free dog food and all of the recent dog food trends seem silly, and I get it to some extent. But we want Bessie to stay healthy and live forever, so that means that means lots of exercise and healthy, all-natural dog food. Travis and I don’t put processed foods into our bodies, so why would we feed it to her?

Over the past month, we’ve taken a bunch of trips to various pet stores in the area to buy Bessie food and treats. We always bring her along with us because pet stores are like a playground for her. She loves sniffing Every.Single.Bag.Of.Food in the stores. I think in her ideal (but not very rational) world, we would put ALL the food into our shopping cart to bring home for her. Right now we’re feeding her Blue Buffalo Wilderness Grain-Free dry food and (along with anything else you feed her) she seems to love it, so I think we’re going to stick with it for now.

Dog owners out there – have you found the perfect food for your senior pup? Bessie is by no means picky, we just want to make sure we are putting the best stuff possible in her little body.

Eats Lately

What I Ate Thursday

I love when bloggers share their daily eats because I always get inspired with new meal and snack ideas. Today, I am jumping on that bandwagon and showing you what I ate Thursday!

Yesterday morning, my alarm clock went off at 5AM and I forced myself out of bed. After quickly getting ready, I ran to the gym and conquered a tough back and bicep workout. By the time I got home, my body was HUNGRY, so after a speedy shower I rushed to the kitchen to make this delicious protein shake:

Protein Shake

In the mix was: 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 3 large ice cubes, 1/2 frozen banana, 1 scoop chocolate egg-white protein powder, and 2 teaspoons of instant coffee. I love adding instant coffee to my morning shakes now because I get a good dose of protein and caffeine all at once! I chugged half of the shake and brought the rest in the car with me to finish on my way to work.

Protein Shake - Little Chef Big Appetite

A few hours later, my tummy started rumbling, so I grabbed a Kind Bar from my desk drawer (where I stash all my snacks!) I am hooked on this flavor, Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate + Protein = YUM!

Kind Bar - Little Chef Big Appetite

For lunch I had a delicious salad that I packed and photographed the night before. I combined pulled chicken breast from the slow cooker, sliced strawberries, apples, toasted pecans, and a delicious new balsamic vinegar to create this bad boy. (All of this was thrown into plastic tupperware to transport to work).

Lunch Salad - Little Chef Big Appetite

As I was taking these pictures on Wednesday evening, I found the best lighting was actually on our living room floor, so Bessie ran over to get in on the action. She was incredibly well-behaved. Instead of lunging at the chicken, she just sat patiently waiting for me to pet her. I was shocked! What dog sees chicken in a bowl on the floor and doesn’t think it is for them? Little Bessie is getting pretty darn smart…

Salad and Bessie - Little Chef Big Appetite

Around 4 o’clock on Thursday my usual hunger rolled in, so I grabbed a quick snack of plain Greek Yogurt with blueberries and my Cardamom Granola. I pretty much eat this combo every day now and I am far from sick of it!

Greek Yogurt - Little Chef Big Appetite

Travis was out for a work event last night and by the time I got home I had no desire to cook myself a “real” meal, so I ended up having breakfast for dinner. I made my favorite protein pancakes and topped them with Justin’s Maple Almond Butter. No complaints here. I was a happy camper!

Protein Pancakes - Little Chef Big Appetite

Looking back on it, almost everything I ate yesterday was “breakfast” type food. Not that I care because that is my favorite meal of the day!

Well, that about sums it up. What was your favorite meal you ate yesterday?

A Weekend of Delicious Food and Even Better Weather

It was a gorgeous weekend in LA. I made a concerted effort to stay inside as little as possible so I could soak up all the sun. Because of that, time in my kitchen was minimal, and Travis and I ate a few delicious meals out.

Saturday night, we made reservations at Wildcraft Sourdough Pizza in Culver City. I’d heard great things about this place, so I was really excited to try it. As the name says, they make their pizza crust with sourdough, which I thought was really cool. We tried their Veggie pizza. It had shallots, mushrooms, caramelized onions, garlic chips, peppers, and more.  We also ordered their garlic knots and chopped salad. In conclusion, everything was delicious.

image (3)

My only tiny qualm was that the pizza dough wasn’t very crispy at the bottom, so I think next time I would ask them to keep it in the oven for an extra minute or so. This girl likes burnt crust…I know, it’s strange.

image (5)

(Sorry for the AMAZING dark restaurant photo…)

Even though we lost an hour of sleep on Sunday morning, I luckily woke up ready to tackle the day. In the morning I spent a few hours cleaning and doing laundry. At around 10AM, I finally sat down to a batch of my favorite protein pancakes with Justin’s Maple Almond Butter and a great cookbook. I perused through it, looking for recipes to make for dinner this week.

image (4)

It was such a gorgeous day and after the rest of our laundry was done, Travis and I walked to the nearby Whole Foods to pick up some groceries. It was one of those days that I was feeling rather inspired, so I wanted to throw everything into my cart.  Luckily, we were walking home, so I eventually snapped back into reality and realized that buying the entire store was probably not the best idea.

After grocery shopping, Travis suggested we go grab lunch somewhere outside. We decided to go back to a little spot we’d tried once before, Courtyard Kitchen on Montana Ave. in Santa Monica.

image (1)

One of my favorite aspects of the LA food scene is how many restaurants offer outdoor seating. Sunday, in particular, the weather was so gorgeous that I truly felt like I was on vacation. I was just in pure relaxation mode.

Travis and I both ordered the chicken salad sandwich. It was served on a dark raisin bread that reminded me so much of my favorite bread they serve at the Cheesecake Factory. The chicken salad at Courtyard Kitchen is delicious and they make it with NO MAYO, so that is a huge win in my book.

Sunday was also the LA Marathon and the finish line was only a few blocks away from our apartment. After lunch, we went to go check it out, but I almost immediately regretted it. Most people already finished the race at that point, so it was a zoo with everyone trying to find their families and get home. There were runners, families, police, and cars everywhere. I felt that no matter where we stepped we were getting yelled at by the police to “stay inside the lines!” or “not cross the street!” I appreciated that there was tight security, but it was certainly exhausting trying to walk even just a block.

When we finally got out of the chaos, we took a moment to walk along the path that overlooks the ocean. It was such a gorgeous day, and I don’t even think this picture does it justice. I feel very lucky that I live in such a beautiful place.

I spent the rest of Sunday cooking a yummy Mediterranean dinner.

Travis’ sister, Justine, came over and it was so nice catching up with her. Whenever Justine comes over she always brings the best desserts, but this time I insisted she just bring herself. Of course, she didn’t listen to me and brought a box of Magnolia Cupcakes! Let’s be honest, I could NEVER say no to a good cupcake. She is always so thoughtful.

Here is a peek of one of Sunday night’s recipes:
