So by 5PM on Sunday night, all I wanted was food, food, and FOOD.

I was getting seriously hangry (definition: a state of severe hunger that leads to anger). AKA: Avoid me at all costs.

Travis and I were going to make a big batch of our beloved Turkey Meatballs, but I was even too impatient to let those simmer. So instead, we took an old Asian Turkey Burger recipe and adapted it to make little meatballs.

And a little dipping sauce to go along with them.

This dish would be a great appetizer to serve at a dinner party as your guests sip on a cold beer or glass of wine.

For me, it was perfectly satisfying for dinner – especially considering it all came together in under 30 minutes.

Asian Turkey Meatballs
  • 1 lb. white ground turkey
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup whole wheat breadcrumbs (I used Ian's Whole Wheat Panko)
  • 2 scallions, chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon sriracha
  • 1 Tablespoon low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for more spice)
Sesame-Soy Dipping Sauce
  • 4 Tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh scallion
  • ½ teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)
  1. Preheat oven to 500 degrees F. Spray a nonstick baking sheet with cooking spray.
  2. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl until well combined. Form the meatballs into 12 balls and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 14-15 minutes on the middle rack of the oven. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately remove the meatballs from the baking sheet onto a different plate or platter to prevent them from overcooking
  3. Serve hot with the dipping sauce (recipe below)
  4. To make the dipping sauce, in a small bowl whisk together the soy sauce through the water. Sprinkle with the scallions and the sesame seeds.

The Best (and Healthiest!) Turkey Meatballs

Meet Maggie, my new foster dog!


Doesn’t she have the sweetest face? She is crazy snuggly (which is my FAVORITE).

Because she is so darn cute, Maggie has already been adopted, but we are taking care of her for another week until she is off her medication and all clear to play with other dogs.

Like all of our foster dogs, Maggie is very curious about all of the delicious smells coming from the kitchen.

I have been using this turkey meatballs recipe for months now, and it seems like every foster dog goes wild for these. I love watching their little noses perk up as they sniff the air and then begin to scour the floor for a dropped bite.

Our first foster dog used to lick the air continuously when he smelled food in the kitchen — I think he was hoping something would eventually appear in his mouth? It never really got him anywhere, but you can’t fault him for trying!

I know I have said I love trying new recipes whenever I can, but I gotta tell you, I think I make these meatballs once a week now. My coworkers have definitely started to catch on considering how often they make an appearance in the conference room at lunch (they reheat really well). Some have asked for the recipe and now they’re hooked, too!

I can’t really tell you how many people this recipe feeds. My boyfriend could easily sit there and eat the whole batch (yes, they are that good). But for me, depending on how big I make them, I usually eat 3-4. I’ll leave it up to you.

I like to double the batch so I have extras for lunch the next day. And dinner. And lunch again. Delicious, I tell you!

I serve mine with whole wheat pasta, extra parmesan for sprinkling and sometimes red pepper flakes and fresh basil. These meatballs are also very filling without the pasta, so a side of veggies would be just fine.

  • 1lb lean ground turkey (I like Empire)
  • slightly less than ½ cup grated parmesan
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tablespoon ketchup
  • ¼ cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ medium onion, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup finely chopped parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Canola Oil
  • Any jar of tomato sauce (I love Rao's and Whole Foods 365 Sundried Tomato and Basil)
  • Whole Wheat Pasta
  1. In a large bowl combine all the ingredients turkey through black pepper. Heat a large pan over medium heat. Add 2T of canola oil to the pan. Form the meatballs to desired size (mine were slightly larger than a golf ball). When the oil begins to smoke, add about 5 meatballs to the pan, ensuring not to overcrowd. Brown the meatballs on all sides. Remove to a plate layered with paper towels to cool (the paper towels soak up extra oil). Continue this process until all of the meatballs are browned. Remove pan from the heat.
  2. Wipe the pan clean with a paper towel if there is remaining oil in the pan. Return all of the meatballs to the pan. Add about ¾ of the jar of sauce so that it covers the meatballs. Cover the pan and turn the heat to low (or whatever heat gets the pan to a good low simmer). Simmer the meatballs in the sauce until they are cooked through, about 15-20 minutes, flipping them halfway.
  3. Remove from heat and serve immediately on top of whole wheat pasta. Garnish with extra parmesan, red pepper flakes, and fresh basil if desired.

Asian Turkey Burgers

What’s your general thought on turkey burgers?  Are you someone who finds them dry and tasteless? Ya, me too.  I try to opt for turkey burgers whenever I can, but so often I end disappointed by the taste, texture, or crazy amount of added salt.

Well, this recipe for Asian Turkey Burgers is totally different.  These burgers have a ton of flavor and are so easy to make. For a moister turkey burger, it is always better to go with a good quality ground turkey with a little bit of fat (85% lean is great). Trust me, much better than the 99% lean.

Pro tip: Check the sodium content of the ground turkey you buy. Often the levels are high, which won’t taste great with the added soy sauce in this recipe. If you can’t find a low- sodium ground turkey, I would definitely go with a low-sodium soy sauce (or simply cut back on the soy sauce) for this recipe.

I served mine on a whole wheat bun with lettuce, tomato and a little bit of Sriracha! These would also go great with a side of Crispy Sweet Potato Fries.

  • ¾ lb ground turkey
  • 1.5 T cilantro, chopped
  • ¼ cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 1 large clove garlic, minced
  • 1 T soy sauce
  • 2 scallions, finely chopped
  • 1.5 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1.5 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
  • pinch red pepper flakes (optional for spicier taste)
  • Whole Wheat hamburger buns
  • Lettuce and tomato
  • Sriracha for serving
  1. In a large bowl combine all of the ingredients with your hands. Form into 2-4 patties.
  2. Grill (or cook on a stove top if you don’t have a grill) on each side for about 5-7 minutes until a meat thermometer registers 165 degrees.
  3. Serve on a bun with lettuce, tomato, and a little bit of Sriracha.

Healthy Turkey Chili

You know what today is? Today is a sweatpants day. A roll out of bed late and decide to do nothing day. Today is a day we sit on the couch and watch really bad TV marathons. Jersey Shore – check. Law and Order SVU – double check. Real Housewives of…okay let’s not push it.

It’s too damn cold to even think about going outside so let’s grab our snuggies (I know you secretly bought one, it’s fine), our favorite pair of sweatpants (embrace the elastic waistband) and eat some healthy turkey chili.

This chili is slightly spicy, hearty and totally filling.  I recommend buying a ground turkey with a little bit of fat because it will have much more flavor.

Serve it over brown rice and you’re ready to party.

Serves: 6
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 15 oz. black beans
  • 15 oz. kidney beans, drained
  • 24 oz. crushed tomatoes
  • 1 Tablespoon chili powder
  • ½ Tablespoon cumin
  • one dash cayenne
  • 1½ T brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt (more or less to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • cheddar cheese, for serving
  1. Heat oil in a dutch oven or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Saute until tender - about 10 minutes. Season the ground turkey with salt and pepper. Make a well in the center of the onion mixture and add the turkey. Brown for about ten minutes.
  2. Stir in the beans and tomatoes. Season with chili powder, cumin, cayenne, brown sugar, salt and pepper. Reduce heat and simmer covered for at least 20 minutes (I simmered for about 2 hours - the longer is definitely better).
  3. Stir in the fresh cilantro and serve over brown rice with grated cheddar cheese.
