An October Photo Dump

Oh mannnnnnn where has this month gone? October has been so busy for me.

– We’ve had a ton of visitors

– We had an ant infestation in our apartment (don’t even get me started on this one…)

– I’ve been working a lot

– I had an eye infection + Travis was really sick. Bleh!

– And it’s been ridiculously hot in Los Angeles.

Travis and I both feel as though we haven’t been very healthy the past month and we’re looking forward to getting back on track together. Because it’s been so hot in our apartment, we haven’t cooked as much as we usually do, which means a lot of take-out. While we try to get “healthier” take-out, it’s still not as clean as when we cook ourselves. Also, when we have visitors, we tend to eat out (and drink) much more than usual. And on top of it all, since both of us have had our share of illnesses, we haven’t been able to hit the gym as frequently.

This past weekend we did a BIG grocery run at Whole Foods and stocked up on lots of healthy meals and snacks for the week. We’re both looking forward to cooking more and we’re pushing each other to go to the gym every morning before work.

Whole Foods

To get this Monday rollin’ I am going to share a big old photo dump of recent pics from my iPhone.

Let’s go!

Travis dressed Bessie up to root for the Yankees in their last game. Sadly (for Travis), her jersey didn’t do much to help the team. Bessie has the same attitude towards sports as I do… she wasn’t even facing the TV the entire game.

October in LA has been unbearably hot for everyone. It’s been 90+ degrees a majority of the time and all of us are wondering where the heck fall is. The mornings have been the best time to exercise because the temps are cooler. I’ve been lucky to catch some AWESOME photos of sunrises along the beach like this one.

Santa Monica

We’ve had a lot of events at work lately. On this particular day, I was photographing (and taste-testing!) new seasonal cocktails.

CHAYA Downtown Cocktail

My favorite twins (Liz and Becky) in town from the East coast last weekend! We rowed together in high-school and college (well, they rowed and I was their coxswain). Now that I live across the country, it’s rare I get to see them, so I was reaaaaaally excited for their visit. We had an awesome weekend together and packed so much into just three days. One highlight was sitting at the bar at Wally’s in Beverly Hills and tasting lots of awesome wines.

Friends in LA

On the Sunday of their visit, we took a road trip down the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway).

Friends in LA

…And hopped out somewhere in Malibu to snap a photo together.

Friends in LA

The next day my parents were in town! YAY! YAY!

I took them to lunch at CHAYA Downtown Los Angeles (one of the restaurants for which I work). They both loved their meals and it was a blast “taking them to work” with me.

Mom and Dad in LA

My current favorite item on the menu at work: Salmon with Caper-Tomato Salsa, Lotus Chips, and an Arugula Salad. I could eat this every day. So flavorful and light.

This weekend Travis and I INTENDED to lay low because everything’s been so busy, but I guess that wasn’t really in the cards.

We ended up doing a lot of stuff around the house: laundry, meal prep…and in Trav’s case, building a new desk.

Travis Desk

(Which he was very proud of).

TJ Maxx

Anyone who knows me knows I am obsessed with TJ Maxx. I buy everything there: clothing, accessories, suitcases, home decor, dog beds, kitchen equipment, everything. The closest TJ Maxx is only 3 blocks from our apartment (YIPPPEEEE!), so I constantly pop in to see what’s new in stock. On Sunday I was in search of decorative storage options for our apartment.

I walked home with the most massive bag of stuff, which looked a tad ridiculous because I am so petite. I definitely counted that as my second workout for the day.

A few months ago, I talked about Bessie’s egg bed and how she was obsessed with it. Unfortunately, it was recently torn in the washing machine, so I had to get a new one.

When I last posted about this bed, it was ridiculously priced on Amazon, but it’s since gone waaaaay down, so we bought a new one. For the record, we found the first one at TJ Maxx for only $19.99 (No I am not a TJ Maxx Brand Ambassador, but hey, if they’re reading this then YES I LOVE YOU!).

Dog owners – you seriously HAVE to get this bed. Your pup will thank you.

So now you’re all caught up! I hope you guys have a great Monday. I will see you later this week with a brand new recipe 😉

Eats Lately Life Lately

Photo Dump

Sharing a big ol’ photo dump from my iphone! I haven’t done this in awhile, so I am ready to catch you up on what I’ve been up to.

Dinner Party

Travis and I have talked about doing monthly dinner parties at our apartment forever now, but we finally got around to it. We hosted a Mediterranean-themed dinner party and invited over four of our friends. We cooked the main meal and our guests brought the appetizers and desserts. All of the food was AMAZING and we all had a blast. Travis and I promised to commit to doing this once a month from now on, but I know with the holidays right around the corner it is going to be tough.

Bessie Suitcase

Travis was unpacking from a brief work trip and Bessie decided that his suitcase was her new bed. She does a lot of things that don’t exactly make much sense, but we love her for it. She either reaaaaaaally missed her Dad or she genuinely thought his suitcase was a new bed for her…Really wish I could read her mind sometimes.

Little Door

I met my old coworker for dinner at The Little Door in Santa Monica last week. The Little Door in West Hollywood was one of the first restaurants I ever went to LA and it quickly became my favorite. It is always my go-to restaurant for special occasions. I was thrilled when I heard they were opening a location on the west side of LA because it meant a much shorter trek to my favorite food. The new location did not disappoint, but catching up with my old coworker was even better.

Girls Night

My friend Kelly put together a girl’s night out on Saturday and I was so excited! None of us girls new each other (Kelly was the link), but we hit it off right away! We first went over to Kelly’s for drinks and appetizers (she put together an amazing spread of food) and then we headed out to the Church Key for dinner together.

Girls Night Girls Night

Unfortunately, the photos from the night are very blurry, but I am glad I at least snagged a few. I loved meeting these girls so much, and we all knew right away that we are going to be great friends!

A HUGE highlight of the night was when I spotted the entire cast of How to Get Away With Murder at the table next to us. Do you watch that show? If not, you MUST start – it is so addicting. I watch it religiously every Thursday, so I had a minor freak out when I saw them so close to us. I went over and told them how much I loved the show and they were so cool about it.

How to Get Away with Murder

I don’t even care that it’s blurry because it is the BEST.PHOTO.EVER. Even if you don’t watch HTGAWM, you may recognize a few of them from Harry Potter, Gilmore Girls, and Orange is the New Black.

Protein Pancakes

I got home reaaaaaally late on Saturday night Sunday morning, so I was thrilled to open my eyes in the morning to Travis bringing in breakfast in bed. He brought me my favorite protein pancakes and coffee and I was the happiest girl on the planet. I ended up bringing the food back to our dining room to eat with him because I didn’t want to eat alone, hah.

The rest of Sunday I basically just lounged around all day. And now we are all caught up!

Making Me Smile

Sometimes we go through our day-to-day routine and don’t stop to acknowledge the little things in our lives that make us happy.

I know that I often get so caught up in my daily rush, that I often forget to do this. So, here are a few things in my life that are currently making me smile:

Snail Mail

I love the feeling of coming home and finding a letter in the mail that isn’t a bill or flyer. Recently, I’ve been getting lots of mail, like thank you notes and St. Patrick’s Day cards, and I love it! What the senders of these cards don’t know is that I always save their mail. For as long as I can remember, I’ve saved hand-written notes that have a special sentiment inside. I love holding on to these memories and they are really nice to revisit now and then.

We’ve had Bessie, our current foster dog, for almost three months now! People always ask us if we get attached, and the big, fat answer is YES. I believe every dog is special, but when you foster a dog for so many months, it is impossible not to grow attached. Bessie is also, by far, the happiest dog we’ve had, so she constantly makes me laugh and smile.

Every dog we’ve fostered had a little routine to show they were excited when we came home. Wally grabbed his favorite toy and ran in circles. Woody leaped over two feet in the air. Bessie dances! She lifts her little paws up and down in a motion that, I swear, looks just like she is doing a happy dance. It is the sweetest thing.

I can’t believe she hasn’t been adopted yet, but I am not complaining because I love having her around!

Extra Daylight

I can’t express enough how much I love daylight savings in the spring. During winter, I feel like I never see daylight because by the time I leave work at night it is already dark. I also always bring my lunch to work, so I rarely go outside in the middle of the day. Now that we moved the clocks one hour ahead, I have an extra hour of sunshine at the end of the day. I’ve been taking advantage of this by going on short evening runs after work, when I have the time. I’ve always loved running along the ocean and watching the sunset, but recently my favorite thing to do is take a new route each run and explore different streets in my neighborhood. I’ve discovered so many beautiful houses along the way.

The sightseeing way makes my runs fly by, and I find that I barely check my watch.

Long Distance Friendship

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to stay in better touch with my friends on the East coast. With the time difference and all of our different schedules, it can be so easy to fall out of touch, but I am really trying to fix that. I generally try to call a different friend on my way home from work each night, even if it is just for a quick chat.

Last week, when I got home from work, there was a beautiful bouquet of flowers at my doorstep. I thought it was a mistake because it wasn’t my birthday or a holiday. I checked the card, and it was addressed to me from my best friend from Boston, Amanda! She sent me the flowers “just because!”

How many people do you know who would do something like that? Amanda and I have been through so much together over the past 10 years. She is the most thoughtful friend, and I am truly lucky to have her in my life. The world needs more Amandas.

Now it’s your turn! What is currently making you happy?
