What I’m Loving Lately — July 2017

Hey, hey! Hope you all had a great weekend. Travis was in Montreal for his bachelor party, so Bessie and I were holding down the fort over here, and I spent a lot of the time catching up on final wedding-related tasks. I can’t believe we are only one month away, ahhh!

So here I am on the last day of July ready to share my monthly list of What I’m Loving Lately. Let’s get going, shall we?

All Clad Stainless Steel Non-Stick 12 inch Fry Pan

All Clad Stainless Steel Non-Stick 12 Inch Fry Pan -- What I'm Loving Lately July 2017 -- www.littlechefbigappetite.com

We recently received this new All Clad Non-Stick 12-inch pan from our wedding registry and we’ve used it every single day since receiving it. It’s perfect for our breakfast eggs and protein pancakes, and you barely need to use any oil to coat the pan! It’s also great for cooking delicate fish that usually would stick to a regular pan.

We already owned a couple of different All Clad pans, but they are not non-stick. I swear by this brand, I cannot stress enough how important it is to use good quality pots and pans. All Clad pans are definitely worth the investment because they cook more evenly and last forever!

Rubbermaid Easy Find Lids Food Containers

Rubbermaid 42-Piece Food Storage Containers -- What I'm Loving Lately July 2017 -- www.littlechefbigappetite.com

I recently decided to get rid of all of my old tupperware and invest in new containers. My previous batch was a mismatched collection of hand-me-downs from my mom (circa 1996??) that had really seen better days. I tossed the old stuff and purchased this new 42-piece set of Rubbermaid Easy Find Lids Food Containers. and I LOVE them so far. I’m sure you know the horror of digging through your tupperware drawer, trying to find the matching lid and never finding it. With this set, there are only 3 different lid sizes and they each match a variety of containers. The lids also snap together so they stay organized in your drawer. I also love that these containers are BPA-free and made in the USA. And they get major bonus points for making my fridge look super organized and Pinterest-like.

Trader Joe’s Spanish Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Spray

Trader Joe's Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray -- What I'm Loving Lately July 2017 -- www.littlechefbigappetite.com

Ever since I took the Pinnertest and discovered that I am highly intolerant to soy, I’ve noticed soy in just about everything. Most cooking sprays use soy lecithin as an emulsifier, so I’ve been on the lookout for a cooking spray without it. A friend recommended this Trader Joe’s Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Spray, and I love it! Most of the time olive oil emits a light flavor on the food it’s cooked with, but I use this to cook my protein pancakes in the morning, and I don’t taste the olive oil at all. And if we’re getting reaaaaaaally technical here, I love the sleek design of the bottle because it’s not too clunky in my small hands.

Travel Packing Cubes

Bagail Packing Cubes -- What I'm Loving Lately July 2017 -- www.littlechefbigappetite.com

When Travis and I were planning our Europe trip earlier this year, I did a lot of research regarding what to pack. Everyone on the internet seemed to rave about packing cubes to save space in your suitcase and keep your clothes organized. At first I didn’t understand, how could a simple cube help me that much?

Well let me tell you, these things are a major game-changer. When we were in Europe, Travis and I each had a set (in different colors so we didn’t get confused), and we used the different sized bags for different items: pants, sweaters, shirts, misc. items., etc. Since we were traveling to seven different cities throughout the course of our trip, these packing cubes basically acted as our drawers. If we needed to get to just one shirt, we didn’t have to dig through our entire suitcase to find it. All we had to do was take out the appropriate cube, find the shirt, zip the cube back up and plop it in the suitcase. Everything stays organized. It also made packing and unpacking at each location so much easier.

Since returning from Europe, Travis and I have continued to use these cubes for our shorter trips and we both love them. We have these ones, and they appear to be out of stock on Amazon, but I think these ones look very similar.

Bone Dry Pet Food and Water Mat

Bone Dry Pet Mat -- What I'm Loving Lately July 2017 -- www.littlechefbigappetite.com

Bessie is a very messy eater. Although she is sweet and dainty in most other ways, when it comes to eating she dives right in (yup, like an animal) and somehow manages to get her food everywhere. I found this pet food mat at Home Goods and immediately scooped it up because it matched the colors in our apartment and it’s machine washable.

After just a couple of days I liked it so much that I bought another one on Amazon (it’s only $8!), so I have a backup when the other one is in the wash. We always pack one of these mats with Bessie’s food and bowls when she goes to a dog sitter. The mats come in a variety of colors and two different sizes, small and large, depending on the size of your dog. I have the small mat and it takes up no room in the washing machine. I highly recommend it for your pet!

Loving Lately

What I’m Loving Lately – May 2017

I can’t believe that it’s been months since I’ve done a Loving Lately post! I always love writing these because it forces me to look around my apartment and appreciate the little things that are currently making me happy. I also enjoy sharing new-to-me products in hopes that they benefit you as well.

Feel free to comment along in the comment section and let me know one thing that you’re loving lately, too!

Nutribullet

What I'm Loving Lately - May 2017 ll www.littlechefbigappetite.com

For years I’ve used a small Hamilton Beach blender to make smoothies and protein shakes. It’s done the job, but there have been times when I wished the blades were sharper and there was more power to be able to grind nuts and other things. I hate pulling out the big old food processor when I have to grind a small amount of something (like the walnuts in this recipe).

I’d heard so many good things about the Nutribullet, so I decided to put one on our wedding registry a couple of months ago. Well lucky for us, it was the first gift we received, and I couldn’t wait to open the box!

I’ve probably made 25+ smoothies and sauces in it since receiving it a month ago, and I love it so far! It’s incredibly powerful and purées everything in no time. I also like that my set came with three cups, so I can make one smoothie for Travis and another for me. If you’re in the market for a REALLY good mini blender, I highly recommend the Nutribullet!

Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Seasoning Blend

What I'm Loving Lately - May 2017 ll www.littlechefbigappetite.com

I LOVE everything bagels, but I only have one every once in a blue moon. I saw this new Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Seasoning all over Instagram for about a week before I finally got my hands on it. (On a side note, I walked into TJ’s for just this one item and undoubtedly walked out with a cart full of things I didn’t know I needed… #typical).

I sprinkle this seasoning on eggs and avocado toast and it’s SO good. During Passover I even put it on matzoh to give it some flavor. I’ve seen other people sprinkle it on potatoes and cod, so I am going to try those next.

Hay Maker Sauvignon Blanc

What I'm Loving Lately - May 2017 ll www.littlechefbigappetite.com

If you know me in person, you likely know that sauvignon blanc is my go-to drink, and I especially love the sauv blancs from Malborough, NZ. I recently grabbed a bottle of this Hay Maker New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc at our local grocery store when I saw it was on sale, and Travis and I both immediately said “Mmmm!” after we had our first sip.

It’s dry, crisp, refreshing, and it pairs great with fish and spicy foods. Even better that I can usually find it for under $10!

Me & My Big Ideas 18 Month Planner

What I'm Loving Lately - May 2017 ll www.littlechefbigappetite.com

I am one of those people who has checklists everywhere. One for groceries, one for the drugstore, one for wedding planning, another for meal planning, and so on. Earlier this year I decided to invest in a quality planner to help keep me and all of my lists organized.

I found this 18 month planner on Amazon, and after reading all of the positive reviews, decided to order it. I’ve never owned an Erin Condren Life Planner, but it seems like this version is very similar (but much cheaper!).

I like that each day is split into three blocks: morning, afternoon, and evening. Seeing my week (and month) visually has really helped me keep all of my wedding and blog-related tasks organized. For just under $18, you really can’t go wrong with this planner.

Good Lovin’ Cilantro Lime Dip

What I'm Loving Lately - May 2017 ll www.littlechefbigappetite.com

You guys. This dip. AHHH!

Recently a representative from Good Lovin’ was sampling this dip at our local Whole Foods. Travis tried it first, and then ran over to tell me to go try it.  Oh man, was it good! The dip is completely dairy-free and vegan, and it gets its light creamy consistency from ground almonds, cashews, and pepitas.

We’ve been putting pouring this dip on fish tacos, but it’s also great just with chips. After browsing their website, it looks like their products are currently only distributed on the west coast, but I have high hopes for this brand and look forward to see them nationwide soon!

Products I Love

My Recent Favorite Healthy Products

Hi! It’s Thursday and I am PUMPED! Why? Because I am flying home to Boston this weekend to see my family and do some wedding planning. I am especially excited to snuggle my 3-month old nephew and see a few of my very best friends.

In other happy news, today I am going to share some of my recent favorite products with you guys. While, some of these are not necessarily new on the market, they’re all fairly new to me, and I really think you all will love them, too!

So without further ado, let’s get to it!

My New Favorite Products ll www.littlechefbigappetite.com

1. Tarrazu Coffee from Trader Joe’s

This is my absolute favorite coffee! It’s a medium-dark roast that is incredibly smooth and all around delicious. I seriously look forward to having it first thing in the morning. If you’re a medium-blend coffee drinker, this one is a must!

2. Wild Zora Jerky Bars

I discovered these mini jerky bars at a local health foods store and I LOVE them! The ingredients are super clean and the flavors are all very unique — like lamb with spinach, rosemary and turmeric. Each one is around 100 calories with 6-9 grams of protein, so they’re the perfect snack for in between meals.

3. Wallaby Nonfat Greek Yogurt

I can’t say enough good things about this yogurt. It’s creamy, smooth and delicious. We buy it in the big 32 oz. size because we go through it so quickly. I like to get the plain version so that I can add my own fruit and granola.

4. Peanut Butter RX Bars

RX BARS! How did it take me so long to discover you!? I love having healthy protein bars in my purse with me at all times because I get hungry often. You can usually find me at 3PM pulling one of these bad boys out of my purse while I am in the car or at my desk.

This flavor is my favorite — it’s so peanut buttery and contains 12 grams of protein that all comes from peanut butter and egg whites. A lot of mainstream protein bars use whey or soy protein and both upset my stomach, so I was really excited to find these.

5. Califia Farms Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk

My quest to find the best almond milk officially ends NOW. This Unsweetened Vanilla Califia Farms Almond Milk is the absolute best. It’s creamy, tastes delicious, and it doesn’t have any added carrageenans or bad stuff. I also use it to make almond milk lattes in my Nespresso machine and, unlike most other almond milks, it gets very frothy — just the way I like it!

6. Dave’s Killer Bread Thin-Sliced Good Seed Bread

Okay, okay, I know I’ve talked about this bread before, but you guys, I’m so hooked. Dave’s Killer Bread Thin-Sliced variety is great if you’re watching your carbs or if you want to make a sandwich, but you’re not looking to eat a TON of bread.

7. Applegate Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets

Is it strange that a girl in her mid-20s is buying frozen chicken nuggets? You can be honest, I can take it.

I am not sure what inspired me to grab these off the shelf the first time, but by now we’ve tried all of the Applegate chicken nuggets/tenders. Travis and I both agree that the gluten-free variety is (surprisingly) the best. The coating on the outside is super crunchy and flavorful.  We keep these nuggets in our freezer as a backup for when we’re home on weekends and don’t want to make or pick up lunch. Plus, I know I can trust Applegate to only use good quality chicken with nothing sneaky added in. If you have kids or if you just want a quick, healthy backup in your freezer, try these!

8. Bob’s Red Mill Organic Coconut Sugar

How did I not start using coconut sugar earlier!?!? Coconut sugar is unrefined and low glycemic index, but the best part is that you can easily substitute it for any other sugar in a recipe and never know the difference. This is now the only sugar I have on hand.

Disclaimer: I was not paid to talk about any of these products. I regularly use and love all of them.

Products I Love

My Favorite Healthy Frozen Foods

Hi friends! Happy Friday! I am traveling for work today, but I wanted to post this for you guys before your weekend grocery shopping.

Over the past few years, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the variety of healthy foods I’ve found in the freezer aisle. For years, all you could find were Lean Cuisines and Healthy Choice frozen dinners that disguise themselves as “healthy,” but in reality are swimming in sodium and added junk.

I’ve tried A LOT of frozen foods at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods and below are some of my favorites. As always, make sure to check the ingredient lists on the items you pick up. General rule of thumb: if you can’t pronounce an ingredient or you’ve never heard of it, put the item back on the shelf.

My Favorite Healthy Frozen Foods // littlechefbigappetite.com

  1. Udi’s Gluten-Free Margherita Pizza // This is one of our favorite options on a night we don’t have time to cook. This gluten-free crust tastes REALLY good and it’s SO much healthier than traditional frozen pizzas! For an added nutritional boost, we sometimes add chicken or extra veggies.
  2. Whole Foods 365 Vegetable Medley // Whoever said frozen fruit and vegetables aren’t healthy is totally wrong. In fact, frozen fruit and veggies can actually be more nutritious than their fresh counterparts because they’re flash frozen to lock in nutrients. I love having a bag of these veggies in my freezer to heat up alongside any protein. So quick and easy.
  3. Van’s Whole Grain Waffles // A healthy and fast breakfast option. I even like these as a mid-day snack with a smear of almond butter.
  4. Dr. Praegar’s California Veggie Burgers // These burgers are packed with veggies! I like to stick mine under the broiler to get it extra crispy. Then I top it with sliced avocado and a little bit of all-natural ketchup.
  5. Trader Joe’s Brown Rice // On busy nights, who has 40 minutes to wait for rice to cook? This pre-cooked brown rice is the easiest thing! Just plop it in the microwave and healthy whole grains in minutes.
  6. Australis Barramundi // I find this at Whole Foods and it’s A+++++! This is what I use to make my Barramundi with Balsamic Tomatoes
  7. Beyond Meat Beefy Crumbles // A meat alternative that doesn’t contain soy!? I’m in! I love using this “Beefy Crumble” in place of regular ground beef to make pasta sauces or tacos!
  8. Alexia Sweet Potato Fries // While maybe still not as good (or clean) as my homemade sweet potato fries, these fries are GOOD. Get them extra crispy by baking them on a single layer and then sticking them under the broiler for the last few minutes. Delicious with chicken, a veggie burger, the list goes on.
  9. Whole Foods 365 Blueberries // Same thing as a veggie medley – there is NOTHING wrong with frozen fruits and vegs! I defrost these in the microwave for 30 seconds and then add them to yogurt. Fresh berries in the middle of winter, yes please!

While I absolutely love fresh, homemade meals, sometimes it’s just not an option, so I love having a few of these items in the freezer for when I am in a pinch.

I’d love to know if you guys have any favorites that aren’t on this list!
