This Chocolate Espresso Smoothie recipe and product giveaway are sponsored by SweetLeaf. All content and opinions are my own.

Chocolate Espresso Smoothie Recipe | www.littlechefbigappetite.com 2

Since we’re smack dab in the middle of summer and the humidity is crazy over here in NYC, I thought a refreshing smoothie recipe was in order. I make smoothies daily this time of year. They’re quick, easy, don’t require turning on the oven, and can be very nutritious if made the right way.

For me, a healthy smoothie should contain a good dose of protein, no excess sugar, and be relatively low in fat. If I want to sweeten a smoothie naturally I like to add ripe frozen bananas, a couple of dates, or these SweetLeaf Liquid Stevia Sweet Drops.

SweetLife Chocolate Sweet Drops | www.littlechefbigappetite.com

Just 1-2 tiny drops of this liquid stevia adds so much delicious flavor without adding any calories, sugar, or artificial ingredients. These drops come in a variety of flavors and can be used in so many different ways: in desserts, oatmeal, yogurt, coffee, and more. I used the chocolate drops in this Chocolate Espresso Smoothie recipe and the Vanilla Creme drops are delicious in homemade lattes!

Unlike other sugar-free syrups that are often used in your favorite coffee drinks, these drops are made from stevia, which comes from the stevia plant, and don’t contain any chemicals or added junk.

This Chocolate Espresso Smoothie is perfect for breakfast or as a mid-morning boost because it has everything you need to fuel your day: protein, caffeine, and good carbs. I used unflavored egg white protein powder to make this recipe, but it would also work with a vegan protein powder, such as pea protein.

For even more nutrients, you’re welcome to add a handful of fresh spinach leaves. When they’re blended up with all of the other ingredients, you don’t even taste them, promise!

I know you’re going to love this Chocolate Espresso Smoothie because it pretty much tastes like an ice cream milkshake, but without dairy, excess sugar, and fat. Besides, who doesn’t like the convenience of having your breakfast and coffee in one glass!?

Healthy Chocolate Espresso Smoothie
Prep Time
5 mins

This Chocolate Espresso Smoothie recipe is protein-packed and contains two shots of espresso to kick-start your morning! Dairy-Free, Vegan & Ready in 5 min.

Course: Breakfast, Snack
Cuisine: American
Keyword: chocolate, espresso, protein powder, smoothie
Servings: 1
Author: Rachel (littlechefbigappetite)
Ingredients
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk*
  • 2 shots brewed espresso (about 1/4 cup)
  • 3/4 frozen banana**
  • 2 Tablespoons unflavored dairy-free protein powder
  • 1-1.5 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder or carob powder, to taste
  • 3-4 drops SweetLeaf Chocolate Sweet Drops
  • 3-4 ice cubes
  • handful fresh spinach (optional)
Instructions
  1. Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Pour smoothie into a glass and serve immediately.

Notes

*I like my smoothies thick. If you prefer a thinner smoothie, add more almond milk.

**The riper the banana that you use, the sweeter the smoothie will be.

Xantham gum, guar gum, glucomannan are all thickeners to help give that thick milkshake feel without using ice cream or bananas. None add significant carbs.
